Welcome to MICAIA: working for local prosperity in a sustainable world.

We believe that economic policies that promote global free trade and mass consumerism benefit only the elites, are deeply damaging to the planet, and destructive of communities, cultures and traditions. We also believe that there is an alternative ; local economic, social and cultural relations that are in harmony with the natural environment and blend modern science and technology with traditional knowledge. MICAIA is working for such an alternative, especially for younger people who are in the forefront of social and economic change. MICAIA is focusing on Mozambique, a country that is under threat from globalization and "development" policies that see it primarily as a source of cheap raw materials for foreign consumers. We aim to enable all people in Mozambique to prosper within diverse and sustainable local economies, and vibrant communities.

We believe that prosperity is not only economic, but has social, cultural, environmental and spiritual dimensions as well. MICAIA's goal above all is to help people identify and work for their own vision of a prosperous community.

Our core beliefs and our priorities for creating a viable alternative are set out in the MICAIA Manifesto. MICAIA's work in Mozambique is carried out by MICAIA Foundation, and supported in Europe by MICAIA UK. Our ethical trading company, Eco-MICAIA Ltd, is developing a range of unique fairly; traded Mozambican products.
