Eco-MICAIA Ltd
Eco-MICAIA Ltd is a company registered in Mozambique working with MICAIA Foundation to help create new markets for community producers and increase the flow of investment into community based enterprises.
Eco-MICAIA Ltd is focusing on two main sectors of the local economy in Manica Province and Mozambique: tourism and food & agriculture.
Tourism has great potential for Manica Province and is one of the fastest growing sectors of the national economy. MICAIA is working to ensure that tourism has a beneficial impact on communities and the environment. Eco-MICAIA Ltd is working with the two communities in the Chimanimani Transfrontier Conservation Area (Sussundenga District) to build eco-camps. Work on the two camps, Ndzou Camp (Moribane Forest) and Binga Camp (close to Mt Binga) should begin in 2009. The two camps will be joint ventures between Eco-MICAIA Ltd and the communities.
Manica Province is a fertile Province with a strong agricultural economy but most farmers produce either on a subsistence level or under contract for a larger company. MICAIA wants to change this by supporting farmer organization, collective marketing and different approaches to adding value to fresh produce eg by processing. Eco-MICAIA Ltd is (2009) undertaking feasibility studies for developing products such as fruit concentrate or tomato paste. Our aim is to establish by 2010 a joint venture with a cooperative of local farmers, to build and manage a food processing business. This will be a model for community driven economic development.
As the commercial agency of the MICAIA family, Eco-MICAIA Ltd is also able to offer services to funding partners, investors and communities. These services include leadership or oversight of development initiatives that fit within MICAIA’s core purposes and mission as well as consulting contracts.
Profits made by Eco-MICAIA Ltd will help fund the work of MICAIA Foundation.
